The recent war in the Middle East means it is time yet again to seriously consider United States support for Israel. The conclusion from my analysis is that Israel does not have a right to exist.
Here are the reasons:
1) A nation for “Jewish” people, or any other religious group, is a violation of the right to freedom of religion. Israel is purely an attempt to force religion on an unwilling population in Palestine.
The basic issue is human rights. Forcing religion on anyone, anywhere, is a crime against humanity. In addition, the declaration of the nation for “Jewish” people started a war, and an estimated 700,000 refugees fled from Palestine or were expelled by the Israeli military. That is a stark example of the crime that happened when religion was forced on a population.
2) Israel is a violation of the right of a people to self-determination, as proclaimed in Article 1 of the Charter of the United Nations. Jews were one-third of the population of Palestine in 1948 when Israel was declared. Thus, a minority claimed a nation over what the majority believed to be their country. The declaration of Israel was an act of war. It started a war, and there has been a state of war since.
The UN Charter also declares the “principle of equal rights”. Again, that principle is violated in a nation for “Jewish” people. Israel isn’t a separation of church and state, which is recognized as a principle that protects human rights.
Now I’ll analyze the reasons given in support of Israel:
1) Jews want a nation that provides protection from historical persecution. It is true that Jews have been persecuted through the centuries. However, Jews haven’t been the only religious group to suffer persecution. Currently, Christians are being slaughtered in Nigeria, and Muslim Uyghurs are being persecuted in China.
The antidote to religious persecution is not to recognize one nation that protects a single religious group, but to support the protection of human rights for all citizens, in all nations, for all time.
Israel has no moral superiority on anyone. Israelis threaten to kill as many as necessary with nuclear weapons to preserve their state, which was not declared with any borders. A nuclear attack in the Middle East region could kill upward of 100 million. In 2023, Israel’s Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu advocated dropping a nuclear bomb on Gaza. It is a fair observation that Israelis have the same motivation to purge undesirables from their state as Hitler had in Germany.
2) Jews claim some connection to Palestine dating back 3,000 years. However, even if Jews had been the majority in Palestine for the last 10,000 years, a nation for a religious group still doesn’t deserve to exist because it is a violation of the right to freedom of religion.
Who lived where in history is irrelevant. The British Empire once covered around 25 percent of the world’s land surface. The right to self-determination of a people begins anew every day.
3) It is claimed that the only real reason for opposition to Israel is “antisemitism”, or hatred of Jews. This is the ad hominem logical fallacy. This flagrant violation of logic should be a real clue as to where the truth lies with regard to the legitimacy of Israel.
The irony is that Israel only exists because Christians in Europe and the United States support its existence, backed by the U.S. military. Whatever their theology, Christians do not have a right to force their religion on others. Christians who support Israel seem woefully ignorant of the human right to freedom of religion.
4) Palestine has never been a country. Yet, the history is that the League of Nations recognized Palestine, and the United Nations recognizes Palestine.
However, that Palestine isn’t formally recognized as a country isn’t for lack of effort. A war was started immediately when Israel was declared in 1948. Sadly, the Arab coalition lost to the Israelis, who were supplied with over 400 tons of bombs, tanks, and other weaponry from communist Czechoslovakia.
In sum, Israel does not have a right to exist. The recent anti-Israel protests on college campuses are a just cause. Peace in the Middle East will not occur until the cause for war is removed, which means Israel.
